About

Brief on Josémaria Escriva Foundation Josémaria Escriva Foundation –JOSEF is an all-volunteer, non-governmental organization. The NGO was established in 2007. The name originated from a spiritual engagement which the founder of the Foundation Comrade Dr. Jude Obasanmi had after reading the inspired works of the founder of Opus Dei (Work of God) St. Josémaria Escriva. His teaching was centred on working with humanity to draw humanity closer to God.
The thematic foci of the foundation since inception has centred on Health, Education, Rural Development, Environment, economic development, project monitoring and good Governance. It is dedicated to improving living conditions and opportunities for the poor, without regard to their faith, origin or gender. We need to reach these people and restore hope. Together, we contribute to sustainable socio-economic development through advocacy, research, capacity building, monitoring and evaluation (M&E) and effective service delivery.

What we do- Thematic Foci Areas since 2011

Education

In JOSEF, we believe that education is one thing no one can take away from you. JOSEF achieves this through:

  • • Reducing girl-child school dropout
  • • Teacher training on classroom management, TLM use, and stress/time management
  • • Strengthening SBMCs and learner-teacher relationships
  • • Youth empowerment via CAFES and Children & Youth Parliament

Community and Public Health Initiatives

Where you live should not determine whether you live or whether you die. For this, we consciously engage in:

  • • TB, HIV/AIDS, Malaria interventions
  • • Routine immunization activities and sensitization
  • • Adolescent and youth family planning
  • • Community health systems strengthening
  • • Demand generation and cancer prevention

Community Systems Strengthening

Everyone can be great, because everyone can serve (Martin Luther King, Jr.). We empower communities through:

  • • Leadership and advocacy training
  • • Resource mobilization and accountability
  • • Community needs assessments and group management skills

Project Monitoring and Budget Tracking

It is discouraging how hard it is for a government to slice away large chunks of a budget, the people need to monitor and that is the hallmark of transparency in governance. To enhance transparency, we:

  • • Train communities on project monitoring and budget formulation
  • • Promote citizen participation in budgeting
  • • Online sharing of state and national budgets.

Human Rights, Sexual and Gender Based Violence

To deny people their human rights is to challenge their very humanity. In achieving this, JOSEF intervenes through:

  • • Advocacy, gender equity, and life skills training
  • • Support for underserved population, widows and PWDs
  • • SGBV education, anti-trafficking campaigns, psychosocial and economic support

Good Governance and Accountability Initiatives

We cannot be mere consumers of good governance; we must be participants; we must be co-creators. In achieving this, we foster civic engagement via:

  • • Voter education and election observation
  • • Town halls and NEEDS assessments
  • • Advocacy for participatory governance
